hence the low scores for many. It was very tricky!

10 pilots, Bill and
Lyndal Coote arrived by Jodel from Taree and had an anxious moment
on departure from YPMQ due to a right foot on the brake making it
difficult to maintain runway heading with the left rudder. BNL became
airborne at 50knts in a nose high attitude. Bill managed to recover
and the return flight to Taree was uneventful.

October
2006 Competition
Our October
competition was held at Kempsey, hosted by the warm hearted Kempsey pilots
and their partners. The weather was very suspect but seemed clear enough
to the west of the coast so we decided to go ahead. FPT was flown up with
4 pilots, Bruce Dunlop and Mark Whatson hired VH-YHX, and other pilots
drove. Though we had intermittent showers all day the flying continued
without any problems.
After breakfast
and coffee with the Kempsey pilots we started our competition with a very
exacting “River Bash”. Pilots were required to follow the sharp twists
and turns of the Macleay River for about 5 miles west, maintaining exactly
600’, keeping the aircraft coordinated at all times and staying in the
centre of the river. It was very challenging and exciting, especially
keeping the aircraft over the centre of a river that was very narrow with
sharp turns in sections.

River. 11 pilots competed with added challenges for the last four because

December
2005 Navigation Trial
Our December
Navigation Trials were flown over two weekends during December. We had
a record nine pilots compete in this short, but at the same time very
busy workload, three-leg navigation exercise. The nav trials are always
enjoyed by our pilots and quite often a few drops of sweat and sometimes
tears emerge during the heat of the exercise.
The scores for our top Navex
exponents were very close with only six points separating the first four
pilots.
1st Bruce Dunlop (267),
2nd Rod Davison (266), 3rd Jack Terp & Adam Booker (261)
All nine pilots flew in a
very professional and businesslike manaer with quite a deal of preparation
done behind the scene. Several other pilots were going to fly in early
January 2006 but unfortunately heavy rain and low cloud saw the end of
that very quickly.

July 2004 NSW Inter-Club at
Condobolin
Seven Hastings pilots attended
this meet, flying from Port Macquarie on the Friday in perfect conditions
in FPT, CIX and AJN and returning Sunday at low level across the mountains
under cloud (at least, the VFRs were under cloud!) Six clubs plus four
pilots identified as sundry took part - a total of 38 individuals on the
day.
Saturday was a glorious day so there was
no excuse for the fairly ordinary performances from Hastings. Of the Hastings
pilots, Mike Coulter (now an APE) got closest to the target for the flour
bomb followed Bruce Dunlop whose bomb landed on the fly of the ground
judge's tent in the process. Most others were no where within kooee!
Lyndal Coote and Mark Whatson achieved their

June 2004
Our June flying competition greeted us with some very gusty and cold conditions. Our cincere thanks
go to the ground judges who had to sit out in the elements all day putting
up with the high wind chill factor. It was quite a relief to get out of
the cold and into the aircraft to compete despite the “bucking bronco”
feel in the air. Due to the very strong winds only one pilot managed to
hit a scoring box in the Forced Landing event.
Forced Landing (2500’)

Our next flying comp will be on Sunday 18th
July. Until then safe flying.
May 2004
Our May flying competition was allied with the Tri-Club competition
between Newcastle, Taree and Hastings. The weather was perfect and the
competition expertly run by the Taree Club. It was a very “laid
back” flying day with only two spot landing circuits flown for each
competitor – one normal circuit followed by a flapless approach.
The flying from all pilots was of a very high standard but our Hastings
pilots managed to top score and bring home the Tri-Club Trophy.
1st Hastings 90.82 (averaged points), 2nd Newcastle 86.75, 3rd Taree 86.63
Our best performing pilots on the day were
1st Graham Bell (174), 2nd George Northey
(165), 3rd Dave Mitchell (133)
April
2004
Our
April competition incorporated the Vern Polley prize of $200. Our most
grateful thanks goes to our intrepid patron for the generous award each
year. We also wish Vern all the best with his ongoing health problems
and nothing would please us more than to see him in the cockpit of our
plane, enjoying himself and telling jokes. We had 12 pilots compete in
April to try to be the winner and to enhance their flying skills. The
weather was spectacular as usual – calm and sunny. Events were:
Forced
Landing from 1500’
1st Mike Coulter (92) 2nd Barry Williams
(83) 3rd Bruce Dunlop (68)
Blind Circuit (no instrument sequence)
1st Rod Davison (70) 2nd Bruce Dunlop
(68) 3rd Mark Whatson (64)
Straight-In Glide from 1000’ (Always a very testing
event)
1st George Northey (40) 2nd Peter Pritchard
(30) 3rd Bruce Dunlop (20)
Instrument Climb

expertly by Rod Davison and Mike Coulter, also attracted money awards.
Over the 12 flights that were made on the day, the winners were:
1st Rod Farley $400, 2nd George Northey
$200, 3rd Hans Westphal $100, 4th Bill
& Lyndal Coote kudos only, no mone

11 pilots
eventually competed on the last Sunday of the month after two false starts,
one because the clouds were at 300 feet, the second because the starter
motor on FPT gave out.

Kempsey December

Nine club
members joined the Kempsey club for the annual get together and flying
comp. Rod Davison, Rod Farley, Jack Terp and Mike Coulter flew across
in FPT and George Northery and Jon Maguire brought VUH. Col West and the
Cootes drove. The sequence was flour bomb, balloon burst and spot landing
in very hot conditions, followed by a sausage sizzle and general chit
chat. Rod Farley and Mike Coulter managed to burst the balloon, George
broke the streamer and the rest of the team had trouble finding the ballooon
let alone chasing it!
